The Homeowner's Guide to EV Charger Installation
You bought an electric vehicle. You've been plugging it into a standard outlet in the garage — the so-called "Level 1" charge — and waiting 30+ hours for a full charge. Or you're driving to a public station and paying $0.40–0.60/kWh for the privilege. Either way, a Level 2 home charger is probably the most practical upgrade you can make. Here's what to know before you buy.
Level 1 vs. Level 2 charging — what's the real difference?
Level 1 uses a standard 120V outlet (the kind you plug a lamp into) and delivers about 1.4 kW of power to your vehicle. For most battery-electric vehicles, that translates to roughly 3–5 miles of range per hour of charging. For a 70 kWh battery (typical of a Model Y or F-150 Lightning) that's 14–23 hours for a full charge from empty. It works, but it's slow.
Level 2 uses a dedicated 240V circuit — like a dryer or electric range — and delivers 7–11 kW depending on the charger and your vehicle's onboard charger capacity. That translates to 25–40 miles of range per hour. Most EVs charge fully overnight on Level 2.
Almost every home EV charger installation we do is Level 2. Level 1 is only practical for plug-in hybrids with small batteries (10–20 kWh) or drivers with very low daily mileage.
What does installation actually involve?
A Level 2 charger requires a dedicated 240V circuit, typically a 50A breaker, run to wherever you want the charger mounted — usually a garage wall. The installation involves:
- Electrical assessment. We check your main panel's available capacity. If there's room for a 50A breaker, we can usually add the circuit without any panel work.
- Wiring run. We run conduit from the panel to the charger location. Depending on the distance and whether the path is through finished walls or accessible garage space, this takes 1–3 hours.
- Charger mounting and connection. The charger unit mounts to the wall and connects to the circuit. Most Level 2 chargers ship with the unit only — wiring and mounting are part of the installation.
- Permit and inspection. In California, an electrical permit is required for Level 2 EV charger installations. We pull the permit, schedule the inspection, and handle all required documentation.
Do I need an electrical panel upgrade?
Not necessarily. A 50A circuit for an EV charger draws about 12kW at max load — less than a central air conditioner. If your panel has available space and capacity, we can add the circuit without any panel work.
You're more likely to need a panel upgrade if your home has an older 100A service, or if your existing 200A panel is already at or near capacity with other large loads (multiple HVAC zones, electric range, dryer, pool equipment, etc.). We assess this during a site visit before you commit to anything.
If a panel upgrade is required, we handle that too — it's the same licensed electrical work. A typical 100A-to-200A upgrade adds a few hours to the project and can usually be done the same day as the charger installation.
Which charger should I buy?
The charger you choose matters less than whether it's properly installed. That said, here are our go-to recommendations by use case:
- Tesla owners: Tesla Wall Connector. Native integration, up to 48A (11.5 kW), and supports multiple connectors on the same circuit for household with two Teslas.
- Non-Tesla, flexibility matters: ChargePoint Home Flex. Adjustable 16–50A output, works with all EVs via J1772, smart scheduling via app.
- Compact + smart: Wallbox Pulsar Plus. One of the smallest Level 2 chargers on the market, 48A max, Bluetooth + WiFi. Good if garage space is tight.
- Value: JuiceBox 40. Energy Star certified, WiFi-connected, reliable, and typically $100–150 less than the premium options.
Charging your EV on solar
If you have (or plan to add) solar panels, you can program most smart Level 2 chargers to run during peak solar production hours — typically 10 AM to 3 PM. This means your car charges primarily on energy you generate rather than energy you buy from SCE. Under NEM 3.0, this self-consumption approach is worth significantly more than exporting solar to the grid.
For homes with solar, battery storage, and an EV, we can configure all three systems to work together: solar charges the battery and the car during the day, and the battery covers household loads in the evening. It takes a bit of programming but the economics are hard to beat.
What does installation cost?
A straightforward Level 2 charger installation — dedicated circuit, no panel work, charger provided by homeowner — typically runs $500–800 for labor and permitting. If a panel upgrade is needed, add $1,500–3,000 depending on scope. We provide a fixed-price quote after a site visit, so there are no surprises.
